Error estimates for adaptive methods

R G Jones

Presented in this report is a brief review of local error estimators used as refinement indicators in adaptive methods. They are grouped into three categories, those using functions of the approximation, those solving auxiliary problems and those which are used in the context of multi-level solution techniques. Wider aspects of the use and choice of the error estimators in terms of the adaptive methods to be used and the problems to be approximated are then discussed.

Key words and phrases:
Error estimators, adaption, mesh refinement
