The Varieties of Programming Language

Christopher Strachey,

March 1973, 20 pages, ISBN 0-902928-07-4

This paper suggests an analysis of the domains used in programming languages. It identifies some of the characteristic domains and shows that programming languages vary widely in their definition of these domains. Two languages are considered as extreme examples of programming language design, ALGOL 60 and PAL.
