The MEng in Engineering and Computing Science

(Please note that following a review of the course, this degree is no longer being offered to new applicants).

The MEng in Engineering and Computing Science (ECS) is based on the Engineering Science course. It is aimed at producing engineers well-versed in the principles of computing science, expert at integrating computing hardware and software into their products: information engineers.

Topics in the course are taught by staff from both the Department of Engineering Sciences and the Computing Laboratory

There are three sets of examinations, at the end of the first year (Prelims), the third year (Finals Part I) and the fourth year (Finals Part II).

First Year

The first year course is the same as that of Engineering Science, giving the student a grounding in the basics of engineering and related mathematics. Subject to permission from college and department, it is straightforward to switch at this stage between ECS and other engineering-based degrees. Computing subjects in the first year are:

  • Engineering Computation (ie basics of program construction)
  • Digital Logic

Second and third years

Students take a combination of topics from the Engineering Science and Computer Science degrees. Two separate long projects are done: one in the third year and one in the fourth. These are usually on topics in computer science or information engineering. The final examination is in two parts, one at the end of the third year, and one at the end of the fourth.

Computing science subjects will be as follows;

For examination in 2008 - Part 1
For examination in 2009 - Part 1

Coursework Modules (non-examined week long)

Four modules are taken in the last term of year two: computing options normally include

  • Programming in Java
  • Geometric Modelling
  • C/C++ Programming Language *
  • Machine Learning

Fourth year

These vary from year to year. Computing options available:

For examination in 2008 - Part 2
For examination in 2009 - Part 2
