Mathematical Modelling Classes

MSc in Mathematical Modelling & Scientific Computing

16 classes MT
Dr J Oliver

Synopsis

The mathematical modelling classes form an essential part of both MSc courses and take place every week. In the classes small groups of students will model practical problems which involve the interpretation of data, the mathematical formulation of the problem, an analysis of the mathematical model, a numerical solution, and an interpretation of the results.

In the first term, students will study four case studies that illustrate a number of important principles. Working in small groups, they will learn how to approach a real problem, how to break it down into manageable parts and how to set up a model that contains the key elements of the problem.

The problems studied will vary from year to year; in 2005-2006 the problems concerned models for traffic flow, a child on a swing, the spread of foot and mouth disease and the shape of a soap film.
