Overview
The students will get the opportunity to gain a broader perspective on the subject of computing
science - to see something of the wood as well as the trees; to see a number of case studies of
how computing ideas are put together in novel ways or to address more sophisticated applications.
Learning Outcomes
This non-examined course gives students a broader overview of the areas in which Computer Science
ideas can be applied, sometimes including a look ahead to more advanced material than can be studied
in detail in later years. The course is organised as a sequence of four segments of four lectures,
each segment given by a different lecturer. The topics vary from year to year, but typically some
segments are given by invited speakers from other departments in Oxford or from industry. Possible
topics include: graphics and visualisation, computer security, speech recognition, natural language
processing, DNA sequence analysis, neural computing, data mining, medical image analysis, databases
and knowledge representation, quantum computing.
