Synopsis
In the second term students will build on the skills learned in the first term and students will study two case studies in depth. They will work in small groups under the guidance of a tutor to take a problem from its initial statement through its mathematical formulation and analysis to the stage where a short report is written and a presentation made to the rest of the class. The case studies vary each year but recent examples studied include: pantograph dynamics, laying a submarine cable, ant foraging, valuing traders bonuses, catalytic converters, spurious signals in a sonar array, financial crashes.
