DPhil in Computer Science

Student Conference - Programming Research Group

The PRG Student Conference is usually held in Trinity Term. It has been designed to be attended by all PRG D.Phil students, faculty and other interested students. It contains four chaired sessions of half-hour talks, demonstrations, buffet lunch and a reception with prize giving.

All D.Phil students, though to a lesser extent first years, are encouraged to submit a two-page abstract in tex and postscript. Each abstract should make clear whether it is for a talk, a demonstration or both.

It is expected that students will submit an abstract of the work they have recently been doing. They may have given a cakes talk on the work (all to the good) or perhaps are summarising new results which have not yet been presented (even better). First years may find themselves submitting an abstract arising from their MSc thesis. In all cases students, and their CVs, will gain from the experience.

The Selection Committee will choose, from those abstracts, ten talks and several demonstrations. Chosen talkers and demonstrators will be notified a fortnight before the conference.

Lectures will be given in the OUCL Lecture Theatre. Tea, coffee and a sandwich lunch will be provided in the social area for attendees. Demonstrations will be shown nearby. The conference will end with a drinks reception, also in the social area, during which the prizes will be announced. Prizes will be awarded for the best presentation, best demonstration and best abstract.

Conference proceedings, containing all the two-page abstracts, will appear on a web site and will also be handed out to attendees.
