The Queen's Awards
Since 1966, awards for Export and for Technological Achievement
have been announced on the Queen's birthday.
It has been said that the Queen's Award
is an institutional equivalent of an OBE or a knighthood.
The Computing Laboratory was the first
department of Oxford University ever to receive the award, when it won
its first award in 1990, the twenty-fifth
year of the awards. It was one of only three university research
groups amongst the year's 175 award-winners.
In 1992, the Laboratory was the first university department nationally to
receive a second Queen's Award.
